Tasked with proposing housing for the elderly in Palma de Mallorca, this project aims to create a diverse proposal combining public facilities and housing of up to 3 bedrooms for the general public with housing for the elderly. This integrates the elderly and the project itself within the existing city fabric, mitigating isolation.
Drawing from the site’s context within a fishing village, water is not decorative but ‘water that works’. From this tenet came the proposal for hydrotherapy pools for the elderly, to improve mobility, exercise and thus quality of life. Extended beyond this, the pools evolved into a public bath house sequestered beneath a fish market that shares an architectural language with the cathedral it gazes towards.
The project divides elderly living into two; assisted and independent living. Both share a common room, open air loggia and hydrotherapy pools beneath their semi-private courtyard.
