During my undergraduate year I have studied living at both ends of the age spectrum. Through sketching, model-making and digital outputs, I have studied both the similarities between student and elderly living, and what it means to design intentional architecture
The architectural proposal for the site is a six storey building which climbs the existing site. It is a centre which caters for each stage of dementia, with earlier stages existing on the lower floors, spatially encouraged to engage with the public realm. The later stages and in-house carer facilities are in the upper floors, where the inhabitants are more vulnerable and therefore protected. It is crowned with a dementia research and diagnosis centre on the top floor, promoting Palma de Mallorca as a leading force in understanding and treating dementia.
The proposal exists as both a space of sanctuary and of quiet encouragement that critically engages with what it means to live in a collective setting. The form creates an intentional journey from waking up, to living and working with other students, reinventing the existing forgotten car park as a defined destination within the greater campus environment. The monastic rhythms of the sleeping cells compliment the more generous spaces of collection that exist at the end of the architectural procession.
