Retirement Homes, as a typology, tend to synonymise ageing with decline. Isolated, grouped communities living in clinical, impersonal spaces are led to live contentedly, yet silently. Ageing populations are pushed from the limelight; deemed too old, too frail, too late in life to begin anew.
Just as the older people should refuse to fade into obscurity, the folklore of the Sibyl survived through communal action, passed through and valued by generations of Mallorcans. This theme follows through to the Song of the Sibyl with the rejection of individualism for a life of communal responsibility and relationships.
Thus, L’ull de la Sibil·la (Eye of the Sibyl) was designed around the idea of “living with purpose”. This project approaches ‘purpose’ through fostering ambition and connection.
