Coming to the end of my MArch studies, seven years after beginning my architectural education, my interests have developed toward designing socially and culturally rooted architecture that draws on local heritage, craft and materiality to create meaningful and resilient communities.
This project investigates the regeneration of Nyhamnen, Malmö, through a three-phase design process that progressively scales from urban strategy to architectural and technical resolution. Drawing on the area’s rich maritime heritage, particularly its history as one of the world’s largest shipbuilding centres and its longstanding relationship with the fishing industry, the proposal seeks to reconnect the site with the skills, crafts and culture that once defined it. The project establishes a sustainable ecosystem of living, learning and production focused on reviving industrial and maritime skills. At its core, Hamnskolan (Harbour School) brings together traditional craft and contemporary industry, fostering collective learning and skills development inspired by the cooperative culture of historic fishing communities. The architectural and technical resolution reinforces these themes through forms, spaces and material strategies influenced by working waterfronts and fishing village typologies, with locally sourced timber and exposed structure celebrating the craft of making while strengthening the site’s cultural and economic resilience.
