A Performance Centre integrating the local qualities of Barcelona, responding to its troubled past, current issues and future potential. Located in the heart of the Sant-Montjuic barrios.



Inspired by Joan Miro’s Paintings, translating abstract form into legible space. Also directly informing the final site plan and its spaces.
Cataluña has had a history of enduring through hardships, defying monarchies, dictatorships and possibly even dragons! The resilience of the city is shown clearly in the locals proud and defiant attitude towards the outside world, exuding confidence and love for the nation. With its own language as ‘proof’ of separation from Spain, Cataluña has always fought for its independent identity, which is personified in its people.
Currently, the city is enduring a tsunami of international tourism, flooding the streets with other inhabitants who lack the signifiers of what it means to be Catalan. These external factors are sweeping through the housing market, buying second homes and creating AirBnB’s, forcing genuine citizens to find space elsewhere, disrupting neighbourhoods and tearing at the identity of the proud capital of Cataluña.
The project lies in the heart of Barcelona, forced deep into the personal heart of Barcelona, the site sitting adjacent to Montjuic and the main tourist hub for museums of the arts. The mountain even hosted the Olympics and has over time been utilised as a weapon against Barcelona’s identity, brutalised during Spanish rule, held hostage under Franco’s regime and whitewashed by the 1992 Olympic games.
In response, the proposition defines a solution utilising three core resolutions. Amplifying the Identity of the nation through Celebration, Performance as Defiance and the Conservation of Identity! These three resolutions in, combination with a site defined as integral to the people, are driven through a well-researched criteria to resolve the Capitals struggles in a Performance of the people. Caring, nurturing and Performing in a display of defiance, shifting the stream of tourism through deliberate passages to benefit both the hyper-local and visitors’ experiences. Resulting in a proud piece of architecture, held up by the people, to nurture all who visit.
